TomTommy Powell started playing drums later in life, making up for lost time by studying under world class drummers Keith Necessary (Ray Charles, Jimmy Buffet, Roy Clark, Joe Pass, Linda Ronstadt, Leonard Bernstein, Jackson Browne, Lionel Hampton, Peaches and Herb, Billy Joel, James Taylor) and Joe Bergamini (Billy Joel, Broadway musicals).

He has shared the stage with musical greats such as Julio Fernandez of Spyro Gyra and for 10 years he laid the foundation for Breakin the Bondage Blues Band from New Jersey, a band selected as regional finalists by the Gospel Music Association in 1998. They have opened for such acts as Philip Bailey from Earth Wind and Fire, Helen Baylor, and The Newsboys, among many others. He has also played with the AT&T Big Band from Whippany, New Jersey.

He has rewritten popular blues songs, including Dump that Chump with personal permission from Rick Estrin and Charlie Beatty of Little Charlie & the Nightcats. He also is a proficient harmonica player and has been playing guitar for many years.

Tommy also has vocal experience, singing tenor in the outstanding gospel choir Ebony and Ivory, performing at the re-known Community Theatre in Morristown, New Jersey.
